M.K.O. Abiola: Life, Death, and Aftermath Background Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (commonly M.K.O. Abiola) was born on 24 August 1937 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. He was a prominent businessman, publisher, philanthropist, and political figure. In the 1993 presidential election, Abiola ran on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform and was widely recognized (domestically and internationally) as having won what many called the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history. However, the military regime then in power, under General Ibrahim Babangida, annulled the election, plunging the country into a constitutional and political crisis.
