Late Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali: Nigeria’s “War King”
Who was Lt. Col. Abu Ali?
In January 2015, Boko Haram brutally attacked Baga town in Borno State, killing hundreds and seizing control. The assault was so devastating that soldiers abandoned the area. But in February 2015, Ali led the operation that reclaimed Baga. Rallying his men, he told them to do just 5% of the job—he would handle the remaining 95% with his tanks. True to his word, he delivered victory. His bravery earned him the Army Chief’s Award for Bravery and Excellence, along with a rare accelerated promotion from Major to Lieutenant-Colonel.
But Baga wasn’t his only triumph. Abu Ali and his battalion liberated several towns—Monguno, Konduga, Bama, Pulka, and Gwoza—restoring them to Nigerian control.
One of his most legendary moments came during the battle for Monguno. To create a safe path for wounded soldiers to be evacuated, Ali singlehandedly drove his armoured 105 Howitzer against waves of Boko Haram fighters. He fought until his ammunition ran out. The terrorists surrounded and bombed his tank, believing he had been killed. For two days, his troops mourned him. Then, against all odds, his damaged tank rolled back into base—Ali, bloodied but alive, stepped out to the jubilation of his men. After treatment, he returned to the front with a T-72 battle tank, crushed the terrorists, and freed more villages and hostages.
Nicknamed the “War King”, Ali embodied courage and sacrifice. As a Major, he took on tasks that even senior officers would delegate. To his troops, his mantra was always: “We will win.” Boko Haram feared him, Nigerians admired him.
Tragically, on November 4, 2016, Abu Ali and six soldiers were ambushed and killed while ensuring Mallam Fatori was free of terrorists. He was just 36, leaving behind a wife and three young children. His passing shook the nation—the Chief of Army Staff wept openly, and the Federal Government honored him with a national funeral.
Lt. Col. Muhammad Abu Ali’s story is one of sacrifice, selflessness, and patriotism. A true warrior, his legacy lives on.
May his gallant soul rest in peace. 🪦
