Nigerian Army Court Sentences Soldier to Death for Murder of Tricycle Rider in Bauchi

A Nigerian Army General Court Martial sitting at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State, has handed down a death sentence to Private Lukman Musa after finding him guilty of murdering a tricycle rider, Mr. Abdulrahman Isa, in Azare town, Bauchi State.

According to details presented during the trial, the incident occurred when Musa, who was on active duty at the time, unlawfully shot and killed the commercial tricycle operator. The act was described as a clear violation of both military discipline and civil law, leading to his arraignment before the General Court Martial.

Delivering the judgment, the presiding military judge stressed that the Nigerian Army does not condone acts of lawlessness among its personnel and that any soldier who engages in criminal conduct would face the full weight of justice. He further noted that Musa’s action not only resulted in the loss of an innocent life but also brought disrepute to the Nigerian Army.

The sentence, death by hanging, underscores the military’s commitment to maintaining discipline and accountability within its ranks, as well as upholding its responsibility to protect, rather than harm, the citizens it is sworn to serve.

The ruling serves as a stern warning to other personnel that misconduct and abuse of power will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
